Starting your own business

According to the Facts About Unemployment Guide 2010-2011 by the Iowa Workforce Center, you can earn up to 25% of your weekly benefit amount in a part-time job and your benefit will not be reduced. Any earnings over that amount will result in a dollar for dollar reduction in your benefit. Let's say that your weekly benefit amount is 0. You could earn 0 x 25%, or .00 without having any deduction from your unemployment benefit. If you earned 0, your benefit would be reduced by to 0. However, if you have self employment income, it is not considered wages and you could earn an unlimited amount of money with no reduction in your benefit. Even if you earned 00 in one week, you could still draw your full unemployment benefit as long as you met the established requirements.

Application Development

You must remain able and available to accept suitable work and continue to comply with job search requirements. If you don't meet these requirements, you will forfeit your unemployment benefit. However, if you've dreamed of starting your own business and just never had the time, this might be a good time to give it a try. If you turn a profit, you will have a little extra money to help you through this difficult time and taking the time to pursue your dreams may give your confidence a badly needed lift if you've been unemployed for a while. It's also possible that you will make new connections that will help you in your job search. The guide does indicate that you should ask for more information, so check with your local workforce office if you're considering this option.

Go back to school

If you'd like to go back to school for additional training, complete an Application for Department Approved Training. If you enter an approved training program, your job search requirements will be waived. If you stop training for any reason, you must notify Iowa Workforce Development and comply with work search requirements immediately.

You can also apply for Training Extension Benefits. These benefits provide an additional 26 weeks of benefits for people who qualify for unemployment benefits and were laid off or voluntarily separated from employment due to a permanent reduction of operations. There are three types of eligible training:

Working towards a GED in an approved program, Training for an occupation that is considered High Occupational Demand by Iowa Workforce Development, and Training for a high tech occupations

Work part-time to extend your eligibility

A part-time job can provide a little (up to 25% of your weekly benefit amount) extra income. Any earning over 25% of your weekly benefit will be deducted from your benefit. However, working part-time will allow you to draw benefits longer if you are unable to find work quickly. Remember all earnings must be reported the week that they are earned, not when they are paid. You must report employment earnings even if they don't exceed 25% of your weekly benefit. You must continue your job search and remain able and available for suitable work while you are working part-time.

The Internalized Strategic Planning Process Dilemma - Opportunity Lost

A well integrated Strategic Planning Process for 'performance companies' has always been the hallmark of strong Company earnings and positive market share growth among industry leaders. Conversely a Strategic Planning Process that has become too focused on the 'now business' and too process driven is a spawning ground for missed opportunity. Under this type of scenario, it is an all too common occurrence for a company President/CEO, at the launch of the annual Strategic Planning Process to secure a genuine 'outside-the-box' commitment from Senior Management when it is generally agreed that outside-the-box thinking by a well established Senior Management Team (SMT) is actually an oxymoron, particularly when dealing with non traditional market share growth.

An internalized Strategic Plan is only capable of incremental market share growth and in fact planned growth in corporate revenue usually just keeps pace with the growth in market size at best. In some countries Skype users can also place calls to free-of-charge numbers while calls to landlines and cell phones can be made for a fee that equates to discount calling card rates. Skype also has some expanded functionality that includes instant messaging, file transfer and video conferencing.

Skype was founded in 2002 and then acquired on September 12, 2005 by eBay for .6 billion to expand their eBay/PayPal e-commerce global footprint. In terms of growth, Skype is exploding - adding 150,000 users per day. Skype announced on October 3, 2008 they had over 338 million users worldwide. In fiscal 2008 Skype had 0 million in annualized revenue with 14.8 billion free Skype-to-Skype minutes worldwide per quarter and 1.8 billion worldwide revenue generating minutes. eBay saw the opportunity and it could be argued virtually snapped up Skype from under the noses of A T&T, the US Regional Bells, Rogers, Bell Canada among others. Skype is the internet voice communications world leader and in early 2010 plans are in place to separate Skype from eBay and PayPal.

When Skype initially exploded onto the market it was primarily used to place international calls for free to other Skype users or to landlines at reduced rates that were on a par with a calling card. If you had family and friend living abroad it was a no-brainer. From there the Applications as often as not were market driven. On the subject of market Driven, Skype usage is also rampant in Eastern European countries and many other countries around the world where internet connectivity is well ahead of telephone landline services.

Some examples of Skype innovative advantages; if you lived in a weak cellular signal area but an area that had a strong Wi-Fi, or as a user if you eat through your free-talk minutes a low rate VoIP service like Skype would be much less per minute than the excess minutes charges on your standard cell or land line plan.

Also, don't forget that Apple iPod Touch owners can use Skype and other VoIP applications (like Truphone and Fring) to make calls, even though iPod Touch has no telephone hardware - you just need earphones equipped with a drop down mic. If your desktop or laptop computer comes with a Webcam then it really gets sexy; through Skype and the internet you can then talk and see one another or even do video conferencing with some limitations. Dropped calls are infrequent and are more attributable to increased network traffic than to Skype functionality. Call quality you ask? International overseas computer-to-computer call quality is generally better than cell phone quality although bandwidth is important and they are only free on Wi-Fi not 3G networks.

Is it possible that A T & T, the Regional Bells, Rogers or Bell Canada felt that a Skype acquisition was either off strategy or might just cannibalize their traditional businesses? Probably, so it's now a competitor rather than a Division or Subsidiary Company.

In conclusion the message is simple. A steady diet of non-traditional 'outside-the-box' thinking may not be a particularly good idea, particularly if the downside may represent a negative impact on the 'now' business(s). But as President/CEO or the individual responsible for driving the Strategic Planning Process you know when the time is right to breathe new life and new thinking into your organization or process. It is all but impossible to quantify the negative impact of opportunity lost; nobody is keeping score of those numbers. If the skill set doesn't reside within your organization there is no need to buy it, just 'rent it'. The downside is minimal, Skype is an upside example.

Can a Tablet PC Get You Through College? Can the iPad or Xoom Deliver?

The iPad 2 was designed with fun in mind. In some ways its a cross, between a game console and a movie viewer. If you are looking for a way to entertain yourself on a long journey or during a work break the iPad 2 scores big time. If you are modeling macro economics, it sucks.

There is still a lot of computing power in a tablet PC, though. The new generation Android tablets with Honeycomb OS and Tegra 2 chips are very powerful indeed. The Xoom is certainly quicker than the iPad 2 when it comes to browsing the internet and it is better at multitasking and game play. The ASUS Eepad Transformer has similar power with a better price tag.

There are plenty of Android apps for college students already. Most of the older ones were designed for smart phones using Android 2, rather than the newer, purely for tablets, Android 3.0 and up.

Two of the best Honeycomb productivity apps are Quick Office and Docs to Go. You can create or edit all of the best Microsoft Office files like Word or Excell as well as reading PDFs.

GDocs, gives you useable spread sheets and word processors that integrate with Google's cloud based docs. These are not as powerful as Word or Excell of course and if you are majoring in economics, you might need the real deal, industry standard spreadsheets! For most courses, they will probably get you through.

There are plenty of organizers so you get to class on time, complete essays when required etc.

Voice recording apps are great for getting lectures down. There are printing apps to get hard copies with mobile or desktop printers.

iPad 2 for College

Apple offer the iWork office suite, and of course iBooks if you have the WiFi or 3G model. There are also organizers and the ability to airprint documents with the latest 4.2 iOS. The 'Pages' App and the 'Numbers' App are powerful word processing tools and spreadsheet tools, respectively.

The Drawbacks of Tablet PC's at College

The biggest disadvantage of a tablet PC versus a laptop is the lack of a physical keyboard. Virtual keyboards of the kind tablets offer won't let you type as fast as most people want. If you are rushing through a piece of work, picking away at virtual keyboard can drive you crazy. Also the keyboard will take up a third of the screen.

One way out of this is to get a portable Bluetooth keyboard that will synch with the Tablet. There are many available for the iPad 2- including keyboards that incorporated into an iPad case. Motorola are offering very good, if overpriced, keyboards for their Xoom too.

The Asus Transformer has a fully integrated keyboard.

A second issue is that not all college WiFi systems are compatible with the iPad whilst laptops are more likely to mesh. This is something you will need to check for each college.

My own feeling?

The original iPad with its limited connectivity (no USB, no Bluetooth document transfers) is not ideal for college. The iPad 2 is lot more business and study orientated. The new Android Tablets offer a real alternative to a laptop with plenty of connectivity and power.
