Technology Used in 3D Displays

Television technology has come a long way from the bulky CRT-based displays. Today, televisions have sleek and thin designs, flaunting rich colors through liquid crystals. The latest Development in LCD displays is 3D screens, which are being hailed as the next generation experience. Earlier, you needed to use special goggles for seeing the 3D effect. Autostereoscopy

Autostereoscopy is one of the most common technologies used in 3D LCD displays and television sets. Autostereoscopic displays provide the perception of depth without requiring the use of specialized headgear. This technology has long been used in research environments, but has now been adapted to LCD displays.

In this technology, the switching liquid crystal is controlled to create a parallax barrier and separate the light into two different images. This results in the left and right eyes seeing different images, creating a sense of depth as opposed to a 2D display where the same image is seen by both the eyes. Stereoscopic technologies can show separate images to the eyes but generally involve the use of glasses.

Holography

Another important technology is computer generated holography. This technology uses both horizontal and vertical parallax to create various viewing angles and a light field that is similar to that of the original picture or scene. The effect created is that of looking at a scene through a window.

But this technology is limited by the fact that a great deal of calculation and detailing is required to create a scene identical to the original. As a result, while holographic equipment is produced commercially by a select few, its Applications outside of the laboratory are restricted as of now.

Volumetric displays

Volumetric displays can also be successfully used to create 3D effect. Such displays use 'voxels' instead of 'pixels', and utilize a physical mechanism to display points of light inside a given volume. Volumetric displays can include rotating panel displays in which a panel rotates and sweeps out a particular volume. You may also find multiple display planes stacked one above the other.

Lenticular lenses

An arrangement of lenticular lenses can also be used to create 3D displays. Such an arrangement uses a columnar array of cylindrical lenses in which refraction determines the view width.

Most of these technologies are in the nascent phase stages. Each technology comes with its own set of disadvantages, like excessive calculation, problem of a viewer's location, and other issues. Nonetheless, it is expected that 3D displays will evolve into more user-friendly, cheaper and less cumbersome forms.
