It was not a long time back when Nokia handsets use to make headlines. The Symbian operating system maintained the lead for quite a long time. Things were looking bright for the Symbian Application Development as Symbian platform was being extensively used in Europe and Asia. With such stronghold in the industry it remains beyond comprehension why the company suddenly lost its way.
An analysis of what the competitors are offering in this regard must be taken into account. There is hype in the market when a new smart iPhone Application developers, service providers and consequently has emerged on the top in the sales market. Within a short span of time it has managed to grab the high end and mid-range market and now is all set to target the lower end.

For mid-range we have Symbian that is not doing too well specially in US. And for low range Symbian devices are facing challenges from the Chinese manufacturers.
The new CEO of the company Stephen Elop understanding the situation reveals the need to create and/or join other ecosystems. He acknowledges the challenges Nokia is facing today and is calling for strategy change and a huge transformation in order to survive.
It seems that the problem with Nokia is the platform it offers. Nokia cannot completely let go off Symbian. It has to maintain Symbian operating system as a large segment of European market uses this platform and hence the need for Symbian applications Development is still there. But what it can do is to start looking for more platforms to expand horizons in order to reach a larger market.
There are rumors that Nokia might adopt Android platform or Windows Phone 7 keeping the Symbian software or not. The move will help it in strengthening its position and open up more possibilities for growth.
