Putting Your Business Online - Important Considerations

The sad fact of life today is that many people just do it! And as much as it seems like a worthy practice, the reality is that those that do it without a strategy get burnt. What am I talking about - putting your offline (traditional) business online (on the internet). You might say that many business start conventionally this way. I agree they do. But how many of these fall over through lack of planning, vision, measurement, and accountability? And this repeats with internet businesses also.

Often we see websites appear with absolutely no prior preparation, and as it happens it flounders along doing nothing productive, their owners writing the internet off as a place of no credible substance.

Application Development

There are significant benefits to putting your business online. Today the internet is in strong growth and appealing to a global marketplace that is suffering economic meltdown(2009). The economic woes are forcing change in key socio-economic behaviors and there is clear evidence of a shift in commercial behaviors, as people re-evaluate their way of life and their source of income. And the internet offers conventional bricks and mortar business's a subtle lifeline; a link to a market resilient in the face of recession.

So its worth the time and energy to do the exercise of establishing an online presence. But I believe it is only worth it if you attempt to set up in a planned process. At least then there is a ordered approach to the event and chances of achieving some success are at an increased probability. So lets look at some of the elements that require some serious consideration.

1. Personal Attitude
Its quite important to assess the way you look at the internet, and the way you picture your entrance to online commerce. Often both are affected by lack of knowledge, and this in turn has the affect of diminishing the integrity and value perception of online business. Through lack of knowledge, and understanding many aspects will be challenged...

2. Determination.
Whether you have commenced with understanding or not, you must be positive that you want to start your business online and that you can stick with it even during tough times. You must be willing to accept that everything may not go smoothly. And although business's generally have a high failure rate, websites can remain in action with little cost to the owner.

3. Perseverance.
Can you handle potential setbacks? A great mental framework and a positive attitude will help you through setbacks. If you can develop a plan and then work the plan, you also set yourself to move through the setbacks. Have the persistence to evaluate and reset after very obstacle.

4. Commercial integrity.
What is the current predicament of your business. Is it performing or are you needing to rejuvenate.
Is the internet appealing as a quick fix sales rescue package. Or are you looking at online to be a serious extension of your business platform. Here again knowledge is important, as is the complete understanding of your business model and where you are heading in the next 5 years.

5. Financial integrity.
Can you afford to lose money? There is always some risk involved with setting up new elements of business although going online can be relatively inexpensive. However poor decision making will result in financial cost and you should have spare funding or a contingency structure. Do not rely on sales happening quickly and in most cases a successful online campaign may take several months and up to a year to start paying its way, depending on what the product or service is.

6. Infrastructure.
Is the business ready to handle the variation to is model. If there is a change in the sales mix how will this affect staff, budgets, production, capacity. Although events may not happen quickly, the event will occur and how will the enterprise cope with this variation.

In particular there are serious aspects to labor management, and being caught out here can also be expensive. This certainly require some forward thinking too.

7. Marketing Integrity
A global online market is a different beast to the local market. There are many factors to consider.

And as broad as the term marketing is, the internet offers quite strong diversity in its Application that it will have a definite influence over your marketing set up. Here are some key items that require consideration...

8. Legal Responsibility.
What are the requirements for doing business over the internet. What warranty's, guarantees and consumer laws are to be addressed and detailed in support of your products and your new markets.

There may need to be some written material set up on the web page, as well as any items that are packaged for sale.

9. Target market.
Who is the target audience and does this audience differ in any way from the customer to date. How do you intend to monitor the type of customer through the internet as opposed to conventionally. There is some significant marketing homework to be done especially if you want to position correctly for maximum sales.

10. Leadership.
Every business requires leadership, and an entity entering the world wide web, must be seen to have its wits about it. If the leadership is unsure about what its online intentions are it will reflect through the organization, and ultimately in a confused sales model. Some aspects which are important are...

11. Personal Dynamic.
What is your dynamic. Are you displaying the vision and wisdom to complete a fundamental business transition. Is this a worthwhile project or just another issue to deal with. Have you generated the excitement for entering a new commercial space and are you challenged by the exit from the current comfort zone? A great opportunity exists to transform the whole business, and create a new time with renewed vigor.

12. Sourcing Expertise.
Expertise is critical in most areas and we do not do our books without our accountant. If you are not familiar with the internet it goes without saying that there needs to be some expertise sourced.

People who know what they are doing with a proven skill set supported by results. The internet is principally simple, but achieving the right results requires knowledge and skill.

Although we have not touched on all the areas that should draw attention when entering the internet business place, it is clear that other than just setting up a website, there should be some careful planning, and a lot of consideration on all fronts. The internet offers a lucrative and productive source of commerce when structured correctly, and for all the cost involved which to my mind is negligible, its worth spending across the board to set up the appropriate business model to enter the online market place.
